While visiting my friends Morty and Cookie in Delray Beach, Florida, I had a chance to paint their across the street neighbors house. It took a little while to get the image simplified, so I made quite a few thumbnail value sketches. Once the structure if the picture was defined, I drew the outlines with pencil and a straightedge. I did not bother to indicate anything about the roof tiles, except the horizontal perspective lines. The only living thing I drew was the tree trunk edges where they crossed the garage.

The shadows were uninteresting. Without dramatic shadows, this would be just another house painting, so I moved the sun and was able to get the shadows just right. Once all that was accomplished the painting was easy.

I have no idea if the sun ever really gets to that angle in Delray, but you can see that elements of the painting, such as the shadow shapes, must be subordinated to the overall composition. Maybe the neighbor will see this ( Am I kidding; Cookie will tell her tomorrow. ), but bet you they won't even pay attention to the shadow. Instead they will complain about the colors and locations of the flowers, which also suffered a little liberty.

The frame around this painting does not exist. It’s there by the magic of the internet, something called "css". It’s just there to dress up the image.
